Edison Studio Team: Welcome back! It looks like you're close to begin writing your essay. But before you do, you might want to do some revising of your T/Q/R. Compare the T/Q/R, as it is right now, with the radial web. Does the information in the web help you to support/prove your claims in the T/Q/R? If it does not, you might need to revise the T/Q/R. In actual historical research, you would be able to find additional source documents; unfortunately in your situation, the only thing that can be revised in the short-tern is the T/Q/R. You might also want to begin thinking about how you want to divide up the tasks of writing and editing the essay.

Chuck

In 1908, Edison started the Motion Picture Patents Company, which was a conglomerate of nine major film studios (commonly known as the Edison Trust). Thomas Edison was the first honorary fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, which was founded in 1929. [1]
Biograph and Edison to join their licensee organizations into the Motion Picture Patents Company on December 18, 1908. This organization, which became known as "the Trust," established interlocking agreements between the film exchanges, theaters, and the Eastman Kodak Company, which amounted to a monopoly on the American film market. [2]

Chuck: Why do you think this information will be useful? What questions came to mind as you read the paragraph? Write these questions down as you read the material. This way, you can look for an asnwer as you continue to read. If you don't find an answer as you read, the question could be used as the beginning of a research string.
While reading that I thought about monopolies, but with film companies. It also brings back to the beginining when I found out some stuff on theaters. I also asked why did it became a patent? Does he want to patent his Kenetoscopes? Or something else?

Its first production facility, Edison's Black Maria studios in West Orange, New Jersey, was built in the winter of 1892–93. The second facility, a glass-enclosed rooftop studio built at 41 East 21st Street in Manhattan's entertainment district, opened in 1901. In 1907, Edison had new facilities built on Decatur Avenue and Oliver Place in The Bronx, New York. [3]

Chuck: Again, why do you think this information is important? What does it tell you about the develop of the Edison Studio? Why move from West Orange, NJ to Manhattan and then to the Bronx? How might making movies change with a move from the confines of Manhattan to the open spaces of the Bronx? It might be helpful to watch the short film, "Rescued from an Eagle's Nest." It's the first link (YouTube) on the Edison Film Studio documents page. How many of the scenes were shot outside? How might the directors at the studio on Decatur Avenue benefit from the proximity of Van Cortlandt
Park?

Based on page 383-385
Edision moved from NJ to NY because "Edision's excusive recognize that they need a new studio soon after fiction narrative film became the company's dominant film production." Basically they wanted to move to NY, they wanted to have a location in Manhatten but land was to much, so they opened a studio in the Bronx. Based on the youtube video; Who was D.W Griffith?
What relation does he have with the Edison's Studio? They produced his plays?
Most shot in that video was shot outside, and I noticed there were many nature factor of huge trees and such, and I'm guessing it must be Van Cortlant Park that showing its beneficial towards the Edision;s Studio film making.

Chuck: Remember to use the Topic/Main Idea/Important Detail format I showed you in class. By using this format you can see how the author uses data to support his claims (his thesis statement). You might think about using bullet points to separate information so that it can be used more easily.

Here's an exmaple of a template you might want to use:

Topic: Edison Film Studio (Decatur Avenue)
Main Idea: XXXXXXXXXXXX (You have to figure this out for yourself.)
Important Details:

  • XXXXXXXXX (page 364)
  • YYYYYYYYYY (page 365)
  • ZZZZZZZZZZZ (page 365)

While you want to organize the data so that you do not need to look back again at the text, it's always helpful to include the page number. It may come in handy if you want to go back and find a quotation.

Remember to write out any questions that might come to mind as you read through the material.

In the building were so many things that not the ordinary film studio had back then. There was a chemical laborotory, dressing roms containing many things, and even a library shelved with many books. then it just goes on and on about the new building

Old Edison Studio was grinding out films for television.
The Studio was very far for actors to travel, which brought up complaints for actors.
However, the studio was closer to the Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park.
Question: Why are these places important for a Studio to be located near?
Hundreds of movies were made.
Question: If many films were made, how come the building kept jumping from company to company? Wouldn't people want to keep it?
Old Edison Studio known as the birthplace of color cartoon filming.
Terrytoons one of the famous films made. A Second of the film counted for 16 frames of color.

Hey Edison Studio Team! First, super job on the graphics!! Who did it? How did you do it? You might want to think about doing something along these lines when you get down to writing the final essay. Where did you get the pictures? Of more immediate importance though . . . Which of the above T/Q/Rs are you going with? If you are going to select the first T/Q/R, you will need to come up with a criteria with which to judge how great the films were. In the Rationale section, you need to be a bit more specific. In waht ways did the studio impact the film industry? You need to do a bit of revising and clarifying with the second T/Q/R. What do you mean by greater effectiveness? I get the impression that this second T/Q/R came out of our conversation last Saturday. If that is so, I what you are trying to say is that the Edison studio of Decatur Avenue was constructed to be a state-of-the-art facility, far surpassing the capabilities of Edison's previous studios. If this is so, then what would your Rationale statement be? What might this evolution of the Edison studios say about the statement of the film industry in the United States in the first two decades of the twentieth century? I would not pursue the third T/Q/R. Porter made films in studios other than the one here in the Bronx. You will run into trouble finding information on Porter and his films. Keep plowing away! Chuck
